DOBEDOO – Funiculars in Naples

CHIAIA FUNICULAR

The Chiaia Funicular connects Piazza Amedeo with Via Cimarosa, in Vomero. This funicular was the first one to be launched in Naples, on 15 October 1889. At the beginning the two engines were in steam. Soon the engines turned out to be not proper for the travels, so it was decided to proceed with the electrification of the plant and the installation of new electric motors. The new plant was inaugurated on 27 February 1900. In 1975 it comes in the ATAN Company, which in 1976 begins the modernization works of the plant. The Funicular reopened to the public on 22 September 1977, but the work continued until 2004, when the whole plant returned to full use after a careful and refined restyling of the stations and the carriages.
